freerice.com

Summary: http://www.freerice.com/ is an Internet game where correct answers win free rice for the hungry. For every correct answer 10 grains of rice are given to the World Food Programme to end world hunger. The questions are in multiple choice format. Most people know this game as an English vocabulary game, but you can change the subject to identifying famous paintings, chemical symbols, foreign language vocabulary, geography and arithmetic skills. Correct answers are followed by more difficult questions, wrong answers are followed by slightly easier questions. When you miss a question, you are given the correct answer. As you keep playing, questions you missed appear again so you can retry your answer. As you play you can see the accumulated total of rice your game has earned. Game sponsors (advertisers) pay for the amount of rice earned.

Critical evaluation: Who doesn’t want to end world hunger? This game is a good way to learn new information while at the same time feeling you’re doing something worthwhile. Interest will wane after a period of time, but it’s a great way to study for the SATs.

Reader's Annotation: Test your knowledge, learn new skills and help contribute rice to the hungry.

About the site: FreeRice is a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Program partnered with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. FreeRice has two goals: 1) Provide education to everyone for free, 2) Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
