Plot Summary: Bend it Like Beckham is the story of Jess, a girl from a traditional Sikh family living in London, who wants nothing more than to play soccer. Her parents, however, want her to be more of a traditional Indian girl and learn how to cook and find an Indian boyfriend. Jess is befriended by Jules, a girl who plays in an all-girl’s soccer league and dreams of being a professional soccer player. Jess is invited to join the girl’s team and comes to share Jules’s dream. However, she is caught between worlds because playing soccer goes against her parents’ wishes.

Critical Evaluation: Bend it Like Beckham is a delightful comedy of manners playing off the differences between the traditional Sikh culture in Jess’s home and her athletic life on the football field. Jess wants to make her parents happy but can’t turn her back on her athletic desires and abilities. The movie is light-hearted and the acting well done.
