10 Things I Hate About You
[videorecording] / Touchstone Pictures presents a Mad Chance/Jaret Entertainment production. Burbank, Calif. : Touchstone Home Video, [1999]. 97 minutes.
Plot Summary; 10 Things I Hate About You is a loose adaptation of the Taming of the Shrew, set in a modern day high school. New student Cameron falls for Bianca, which causes a problem—she is not allowed to date unless her older sister, Katarina, also dates. Katarina is a non-conformist who doesn’t want to date. Cameron sets out to find someone who will take Katarina on a date so he can date Bianca.
Critical Evaluation: Light-hearted and cute, this movie is an entertaining take on high school romance. Characters are a little too type-cast and shallow: the AV guy, the jock, the misfit, etc. but not too badly. The movie does deal with issues of peer pressure, parental expectations and social ostracism but in a gentle way. Nothing very serious happens to anyone, one way or another.
Reader’s Annotation: A light-hearted look at high school romance.
